Most of us start our ezines with stars in our eyes. We envision a glorious read no one can resist, with hundreds of new sign ups every week … or even every day!

We pour hours into cooking up just the right content, and crafting an html ‘look’ for it we love. Then we send it out with pride… to a handful of readers.

So what’s the problem? A simple lack of marketing technique, as I see it. In my five years as an ezine publisher, I’ve signed up almost 30,000 subscribers, and I’ve lost about 13,000 (my Joy Letter list hovers around 17,000.) I’ve done A LOT wrong, but I’ve also done some things right.

My friend Jenna Glatzer, creator of the must-read Absolute Write ezine, (www.absolutewrite.com) has done much better. She’s been at it since 1997, and subscribed more than 75,000 readers. (She only paid for 4000 of those, by buying a previously-existing ezine.)
