Interesting results from a recent survey by Tessa Stowe of Australia’s Sales Conversation. She wrote:

I recently did a survey on whether people like audio playing automatically on web pages or not.

Of the 81 people who responded:

80.2% (65) said they did not like automatic audio 13.6% (11) said they did like automatic audio 6.2% (5) had no opinion.

In fact quite a few people commented that if they come across a web page playing audio automatically, they immediately leave.

How do you feel about audio assaults on websites? (“Hi! I’m Jim

If a website is playing audio I’m out of there. If I want to listen to something on your site, I’d prefer to initiate it myself.

I don’t know why, but automatic audio on the web just feels very intrusive, amateur and spammy.

I hate instant audio! My speakers are usually on way too loud and the audio blasts me out of my chair. Let ME decide whether or not I want to listen to your audio, please don’t decide for me.

hate! hate them so much! I either leave instantly or hit my mute button (usually with choice phrases I won’t repeat here).

The fact is that audio on websites is as old and tired as tiled backgrounds. I came across a site recently looking for audio testimonials in addition to the speaking already on it and it actually made the product far less attractive. even if it fit my needs perfectly I was scared off by the audio assaulting me.

Funny, we were just having this discussion on my networking group. I didn’t realize Tessa had done a poll on this…

A majority of the people that responded to the discussion said that they did not like automatic audio - I’m in that camp myself. I either turn off the audio immediately, or leave the page… depending on how interested I am in the business.

Someone in the discussion said that she got the same feeling from those pages, as she did when she walked into a perfume department at a department store - she felt like she was being assaulted by a high-pressure sales person. I thought that was a humorous visual!

I’ve seen research that says that automatic audio pages perform better in sales conversion… not quite sure how those tests were conducted or what the parameters were seeing as most of us can’t stand it LOL!

Make it unanimous. When I hear audio (often way before the image loads) I cringe. Because I like to give folks the benefit of the doubt, I stick around to see what happens and if the audio is short, I’m okay. If it goes on and on…I’m outta there. I don’t click in to a website or blog for the music. There are places for that…like YouTube.

I often open many pages at once in the background. I have to hunt around for the page that is playing audio and stop it. By then I am already annoyed with the site.

I surf late at night. The sound nearly wakes up my family. I hate it.

(chuckling) this is such an emotive issue, isn’t it?I’m in the UK and I echo most of these comments… Nothing against audio - in fact I have an audio intro on my site, but ‘automatic’ is an absolute ‘no-no’. I back out immediately - no second chance. Rightly or wrongly, I form an instant opinion that this is not someone whose opinion (ergo character) I can trust. Harsh maybe - but that’s how it is for me. I prefer, as Merlyn and Jeff do, to decide myself if I want to hear an audio and I extend that courtesy to my site visitors. :o)

I don’t like the intrusion - I’ll listen when I’m ready and not because someone is telling me that I should. To me it’s the equivalent of talking at me and not communicating.

Both thumbs down for “no choice” audio on websites. Like others who have responded, I mute my speakers or run away when I encounter a site that wants to force me to listen to a spoken message. ~Beverly Keaton Smith

I didn’t realise Tessa had done this study either. I also hate the instant audio thing and have spent time suggesting to my own clients that it’s not such a good idea - give people choices by allowing them to click on a button to listen - when they’re ready to adjust their volume and take the time to listen.

    Hate it and leave immediately.

I dont know, depends on the website… if you are going to a band’s website or etc… you sort of expect the sound blast. I have my sound turned off always…and if I want to hear something i just click it on. No big deal.
