Yesterday I found the Blog Carnival Index … and today I’m givin’ it a whirl. So how do you figure out which carnival will yield the most value? And how do you make time to do this in the first place?
In perusing the offerings under the keyword ‘Marketing Carnivals’ I found an interesting one, Carnival of Career Intensity. Interesting - the guy says that posts which are funny and stoke his ego are bound to get preference. And he only picks five per week. I can’t resist a competition … but I hold back. This guy’s keywords are career, career development, job and entrepreneur. Not really marketing Not my market.

I see Carnival of WAHMs and WAHPs. Cool! The work at home moms are great for my message - they all need platform! And best of all, I am one … oh, but I don’t really blog about that very much. And I looked and her carnival is small. Not many posts.
Next.
How about something general: Carnival of Business. OK, now we’re talking. There are a lot of posts here. A LOT! Ooohhh… but there all about things like S-corporations and corporate espionage. Think this ain’t my folks either.
UH … well, there’s one in Dutch on online marketing. And something called Personal Growth Carnival. That could work. Borderline small … no page rank. I think not.
OK, am I just being too frigging picky?
Oh … here it is! I found it! The Carnival of Marketing which appeared in this particular edition on a blog called Kicking Over My Traces. (Hosting rotates on this one, which is standard.) I will now apply and see if I get chosen. She only publishes the seven best in an ongoing way each week.
Submitting is simple. Just scroll down and see where the next carnival will be and when. Click on the date link. The host info will pop up. Click on Submit an Article in the left margin and fire away.
Help … I’m having carnival anxiety!

Isn’t it funny how we never get over “choose me” anxiety? It just goes from being the last pick for the team in a gym class to a date for the prom to worry over a blog carnival! Life is so circular sometimes! Good luck - if she knows good work, you’ll be at the top of her list.

No need to stress or sweat … I think it is great to spend some time analyzing the carnivals to see which ones fit within your target market.
But part of the fun is also posting to some lesser-trafficked, differently-niched than we usually go to carnivals. Since it takes 30 seconds to submit a post, there is no harm in experimenting. You never know who may catch wind of you that would otherwise never have learned about you.
I personally like to submit on a regular basis to my key carnivals … for my target market, I usually rotate between the Carnival of Entrepreneurship and the Carnival of Marketing. Some of the bigger ones like Carnival of the Vanities (the original blog carnival) and Carnival of the Capitalists are good to submit to every quarter or so since they have a really broad reach.
Once you get familiar with your key carnivals, it is a great thing to offload to your very capable network of VAs!
Don’t forget to offer to host a carnival in the heart of your target market … one of the best ways to draw people to your blog AND position yourself as an expert with your thoughtful analysis of the chosen posts. Once the carnival passes, the link to your blog will be active in the blog carnival page for a long time. I hosted the Carnival of Entrepreneurship a few months back and still get traffic from it. There is usually a link to offer to host a carnival on the main page which describes it.
